Xray is being used in the health industry as the most important tool to diagnose especially in orthopaedic speciality. Xray was a chance discovery by Roentgen in the year 1895. He had the acumen to understand the importance and potential of a chance discovery which is the hallmark of great men.
Xray comes with a rider, radiation… but thankfully it is very negligent. The radiation is measured in Millisievert(mSv).
In orthopaedics, Xray is used to diagnose treat and manage fractures. It is the most important tool of an orthopaedic surgeon. Now we have digital Xray where the quality and the contour are better, enhancing the diagnostic capabilities of the surgeon.
Now we come to the most important question, How much of Xray is safe for a person in his lifetime?
Xray is generally measured or compared with normal environment radiation. The American College of Radiology recommends 100mSv in a lifetime which is equal to 10000 chest Xrays or 25ct chest scans. A standing chest Xray is 0.1mSv.
From this, we can safely conclude, an average healthy individual can safely take as many Xrays as possible in his lifetime, Surmising the maximum of 10000 usually will not be surpassed.
Does the exposure to scans at airports considered as a radiation??
Technically they are radiation .. but the dose is so low its negligible and is considered very safe even for pregnant women, maybe we can compare that to the radiation which a cell phone is supposed to emanate… thogh there is a raging debate about the harmfull effects its generally considered safe.
This content about x ray was very informative to know about and its important parameter to be known by everyone
Thanks for the interest , hope it was useful.
This content about x-ray was very easy to understand and tell about MRI and CT sir…..
Since MRI is a non radiation and non invasive investigation its safe and can be done as many times as
necessary… and about CT i think i have talked about that in my article in the last paragraph.
is it x-ray is safe for pregnant women sir…??
X ray being a ionising radiation is not safe for the fetus and hence pregnant
should not be exposed to xrays.

This content about x ray was very informative. X ray being a ionising radiation .is it x ray safer for baby?
This content of How many X-rays can be taken in lifetime is very useful
Thank you…
I’ve had at least 30 X-rays of my feet ( many surgeries), and numerous dental X-rays and cbct scans. I will need benign radiation therapy for my hands for Dupuytrens disease, and for my feet to treat Ledderhose disease. I am very concerned about my cancer risk.
I am a 65-year-old female with osteopenia. Should I be worried? It’s not close to the number of X-rays you’re suggesting, but it seems significant to me. If I mention it to a doctor, they say not to worry because digital X-rays are fairly safe.
Thanks for your interest, yes your doctors are absolutely right, you need not worry.
Your radiation exposure is so meagre its negligible and can never harm you at this rate.
what would be the effects of going over 25 ct scans? when i was 18, i was a trauma patient with immense cardiothoracic and abdominal injuries, including both of my lungs collapsing (my left lung had to be removed because of how bad it was), shattered spleen and ruptured pancreas, total organ failure, emergency bedside thoracotomy, etc. – i could safely say i’ve had over 15 in the past 5 years… maybe even 20. what could potentially happen after 25 ct scans?
Hi, thanks for the interest shown, your query seems to be so relevent and i would say you have nearly breached
the safety margins and i would suggest you restrict or avoid furthur exposure, and also have your radiation exposure checked
by a qualified professional using a dosimeter.Your radiation exposure is definitely a concern and you should seek professional help.
Hi i have done 5 chest x-ray in 2 month .It is risk for me?? I have done total 9 chest x ray and 1 stomach xray. Do i have any risk in future? Please reply me
Nothing to worry, you are absolutely on the safer side as far as radiation is concerned.cheers.
Thank u doctor
Really thank u soo much doctor
Dear dr it was the best thing I have read in google since one month with I’m searching for Xray risks
Dear sir I wanna share with you one of my big concern these days .i have a baby boy he is 2and half years old during 2 month he got 2 feet X Ray is it safe for him . Now I’m concerned of concern risk ?Please tel me sir
Thank you in advance Dear Dr
Hi, thanks for the query, your fears are unfounded, be assured your child is absolutely safe from radiation.
Sir, when is the right time to wear wrist brace?shall we wear wrist brace at night while sleeping?
Patient with severe intolerable pain and numbness in middle and ring finger especially at night while sleeping.. Has past history of cervical spondylosis 10 years back.. What is the probable diagnosis, Sir? Please help me out Sir with the answer..
Most probably from what you say the diagnosis is Brachial Neuralgia .. but from the available info i am not able to say.. if only that then why a
wrist splint? will need further info.. there are no current complaints.. can i have them?
Good morning Sir. Now the patient has complaint of severe numbness with pain in all four fingers of right hand. Occasionally pain in right shoulder. Initially patient had numbness of ring finger and middle finger only.. Numbness is worse on early morning, exertion, doing any work.. I fear it for stroke symptoms or carpal tunnel syndrome.. Please help me out Sir.
Most probably its a discogenic brachial neuralgia..or a cervical rib..and has to be treated accordingly.
Dear Doctor,
I have had an elevated WBC, CRP and blood protein for several years without any cause. I have a 2mm brain anuerysm, hypothyroidism with hashimotos, menopause and chronic pain. For chronic shoulder and neck pain, I have had 5 trigger point injections with cortisone steroids in a 2 year span (2021-2022). I have had approx. 25 lifetime x-rays (Im 51 now) and more recently 6 CT scans without contrast dye to monitor my brain anuerysm. The 6 CT scans occurred within 3 years of each other. I have also had my annual mamograms since age 40.
My main concern is that my Primary Care, Endochinology, Nuerology doctors do not know why my blood work is off but my new hemotologist is currently trying to figure it out. He mentioned that it could be my hypothyroid/autoimmune and hashimotos disease (despite my endocrinologist saying its not) or the cortisone steroid injections. He also said that it could be something more serious is going on inside my bone marrow like cancer and may want to perform a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy after all the new labs come back and depending upon what they say.
What are your thoughts regarding my radiation history provided herein? Could those 6 CTs within 3 years have caused cancer?
Thank you Doctor.
Thanks for the query, as far as i know its not possible that the 6CTs could have contributed to your
symptoms…and also they are not the typical symptoms of exposure to radiation.
Hello.
I have had about 10-12 X-rays in a year (including mammograms and dental). Most have been over the past 4 months. 2 chest X-rays, abdomen Xray, 2 spine X-rays, Xray on back (4 views) and two on my foot. It’s been a crazy year. This does not count all the other mammograms and dental X-rays I’ve had in my life. I am 50 years old. Do I need to worry about these X-rays, especially since so many in a short amount of time?
Hi,
You are safe ,not a concern. You can stop worrying.
Hello! Is it fine to undergo 2 chest X-rays in 1 day?
Hi, yes its fine.
Good day Doc!
I have a concerned regards to my chest X-ray. I tried to find a job on January 2023 and the company needs a medical requirements. I’ve done it on February 15, 2023. The affiliate clinic of the company that I passed doesn’t give or send me the soft copy of my medical results. I expected it to send it to my email but until now I haven’t received it. That medical referral was charged to company that I applied. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the job position that they gave to me to I decided to resign. Now, I tried to find another opportunity. So my question is, is it possible for me to have another x-ray? Will that be safe for my health? Because the company doesn’t sending any results, will I test another medical requirements?
Thank you so much Doc!
Hi, there shouldnt be any problem .. you can go ahead.
